DESIGN VERSUS CONTEMPORARY ART

The exhibition “Design versus Contemporary Art” comes after two previous unsuccessful attempts – as if it had been waiting for its exact moment, a time when it could finally be told. That moment arrives three years after the last joint exhibition by the artistic duo YO\KO+INA, now marked by the absence of Yonko. In this sense, the project is not only an exploration of the boundaries between design and contemporary art, but also an act of dedication – to partnership, to a shared search, to the unfinished dialogue between two like-minded creators.

“Under the title Design versus Contemporary Art, the two artists are not seeking conflict, but rather examining the fragile balance between the pragmatic and the conceptual, between aesthetic utility and aesthetic autonomy. The project uses the strategies of contemporary art to comment on the functionality of design – and vice versa: it employs the formal language of design to pose questions typical of contemporary art.”

YO\KO+INA is an artistic duo founded in 2018 by Yonko Vasilev and Ina Vassileva – partners in life and art. Together, they explored contemporary art as a conceptual platform influenced by international practices and current trends in art and design.

Their project aimed to transcend the local and challenge predetermined visual clichés, using color, technology (LED lighting, kinetics), and painting as a foundation. Their work often examined the dynamics between man and woman, love and daily life, interpreted through visual codes in a pop art and minimalist aesthetic.

Since Yonko’s passing in 2023, the project continues to live on through the shared legacy of their artistic journey.
