IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF STREET ART (Second Edition)

26 July - 6 August, 2022
IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF STREET ART (Second Edition) | Doza Gallery
"In the Footsteps of Street Art" interprets the street as the beginning, but also as the end of a forever incomplete process - the ever-changing urban environment that we consciously observe and particularly look at.
In this year's edition, together with Sofia Graffiti Tour, we have invited Destructive Creation, City thru calligraphy, Hype all night, Yosh, Rays, Dragomir Kostadinov - PXRN, Wion and Cho in a common space that brings together seminal works, notable moments, key events and extraordinary artists.

The exhibition examines the creative response of the pioneering underground scene through a turbulent social and political history that has undoubtedly helped transform vandalism into a form of contemporary art. It also examines the drive for social change that underpins the work of many contemporary graffiti and street art artists.
Featured Artists:

Destructive Creation (Bulgaria)
Destructive Creation is a Bulgarian group of anonymous activists who are engaged in urban art. They carry out underground actions to change the urban environment to send social and political messages or simply to improve the environment for the benefit of the people. The group became popular in 2011 - redrawing the soldiers from the Soviet Army monument in Sofia as characters from American comic books. The intervention, which became known as "Keeping Up with the Times," attracted public attention in Bulgaria and around the world.

City thru calligraphy (Bulgaria)
City.Thru.Calligraphy. or C.D.C.T are an artistic calligraffiti duo from Bulgaria. They currently live and work in Sofia. The idea for the formation of the collective was born at the end of 2019, as a natural result of their creative searches in the field of street calligraphy. They focus on the art of fonts and handwritten lettering. They use a wide range of means of expression, creating in various fields of fine arts. They are not afraid to mix techniques and approaches, both classical and contemporary, abstract or digital. For them, the favorite tool remains the brush, the marker and the spray.
Hype all night (Bulgaria)
Hype all night is a crew made up of several artists, each of them has a completely different style from the others, but when they combine them together, the contrast of shapes, colors, and techniques in their common works is exactly what gives them their signature.

Yosh (France)
Also known as "Le Poisson", YOSH is a graffiti artist and illustrator based in Paris. Self-taught and inspired by artists such as Di Rosa, Miro and Miyazaki, over the years he has developed his own style in which one can see intertwined joyful creatures saturating multiple surfaces. With the striking use of bold colors, his works stage characters whose round and comical shapes seem to have merged with the walls of our cities. Through his minimal yet hyper-coloured works, the artist shares an overall cheerful and vibrant vision of his imaginary world, while questioning society and the world around us. YOSH's optimism is truly contagious and a reminder that creativity can emerge even in the most unexpected places.

Rays (Bulgaria)
Rays is an artist interested in animation, illustration, and contemporary art. His graffiti is inspired by early skateboard culture from the West Coast of the USA. And the characters and lettering he cleverly combines depict scenes from the life of a graffiti rider in action. For Rays, drawing is a way to realize his creative ideas, but also to tell stories to his audience.

Dragomir Kostadinov - PXRN (Bulgaria)
Dragomir Kostadinov - PXRN creates artistic illustrations, paintings, and sculptures that give a strikingly accurate description of the social, political, and cultural phenomena around us. In 2000, PXRN began painting on walls as part of the infamous graffiti crew "ND2ND". Dragomir Kostadinov's style is provocative, bold and directly commenting with illustration and sculpture on the social problems of the world today. PXRN hasn't left the streets, he has simply taken their raw charm and brought it into the galleries through his work so that we can all stop for a second and reflect on what we otherwise overlook in our hectic routine.

Wion (Bulgaria)
Wion was born in 1989 in Blagoevgrad. From a very young age he started drawing and when he was 15 he started painting graffiti and continues to develop his style to this day.

Cho (Bulgaria)
Cho started doing graffiti in 2004 in Sofia. In 2006 he joined "VA" (Vulgar Attack). Mostly, his graffiti is found in illegal places. His style is recognizable with many alien worms and other bizarre creatures.
At night, we roam the town.
For life, although brief,
to leave our own
imprint.
